Patrol

Patrol is a different type of beast at a rural sheriff's office. Patrol responsibilities range from motorists assists, to investigation of Part I or part II crimes. An officer may have to investigate a vehicle collision and leave the county to conclude the investigation at a hospital thirty miles away. While leaving the county, an officer that is off duty or the sheriff may have to come on duty to answer complaints, or fill the out of county officers shift until they return. A patrol officer may have to serve an arrest warrant, then serve a civil process, then transport a mental patient to Western State Hospital in Hopkinsville. Their duties may include traffic enforcement, drug interdiction, DUI detection and scraping dead animals or debris off of the roadway. The officers working patrol have to have vast knowledge and training to be able to handle any given situation that arises while they are working. One thing is certain that no two days are alike and every officer working patrol must be a "jack of all trades and a master of none".
